What is Dilution?

Essential oils are strong and potent so they might need to be diluted for people. Dilution means adding a carrier oil to the essential oils. A carrier oil is a vegetable oil—such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil—that can be used to dilute essential oils.

Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable to the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the essential oil. In fact, it prevents waste due to excessive application. Although keep in mind that vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (such as mineral oil, baby oil, and petroleum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils.

Click here to see a great guide from the people at Rollerball Make & Take on Facebook. This guide shows you how much to dilute for people of different ages. It is also important to get educated on different oils as some are considered "hot" and most people are sensitive to these oils so they should always be diluted these include Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Oregano, and Thyme.
